“Hey, see this small opening in the coffee cup lid; you know, the other one that you don’t sip through?” “It’s a pressure regulator vent.”
“Uh.… it’s a hole in the lid.”
“No. You see when you drink out of the cup the liquid is reduced and creates a void in the overall volume of the cup. To compensate for this loss another small opening in the lid allows air to enter into the cup and thus regulate—or equalize—the volume inside.” “A perfect pressure regulator vent!”
“Uh…. It’s a hole in the lid.”
Which person are you?... the one who sees a real value in something that goes beyond the obvious, or the one who sees it just as it’s apparent self? How many times do we see our roles in life as simple, ordinary or insignificant?
The truth is we have a real function, much like that little hole in a coffee cup lid. We may think it commonplace within our view of the world around us, but God sees it much more clearly than that. His design incorporates everyone to function in this world and—believe it or not—it’s a very significant function at that.
Sometimes we just can’t see beyond the apparent obviousness of what we do, yet everything we say, do, think, dream, and choose is part of the Creator’s plan. We may not always be in line with that plan by our choices or actions, but it is still part of His design.
Generally speaking, I see what I do in life as “just a hole in the lid” and it takes prayerful effort for me to change that mindset. Once you allow yourself to realize the importance God has placed on you, however, you can then be free to experience the fullness of that knowledge. This, then, brings much more significance and meaning to your worship. When you have high regard for God’s creation—that being you—the gratefulness and praise seems to spring forth much more effortlessly.
